Dr. Donan Mmbando
Dr. Donan Mmbando is a registered Medical Doctor in Tanzania since 1989 with more than 30 years of working experience in health systems in Tanzania in the areas of clinical care, public health, research and Health management. He has a unique experience in health sector as he has held various positions at all levels of health systems from implementation to policy development and review, advocacy and sector-wide planning; starting from being District Medical Officer (DMO), Regional Medical Officer (RMO), Director of Policy and Planning at Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS) and at the Ministry of Health – Director of Preventive Services, Chief Medical Officer and Permanent Secretary.
Dr. Mmbando was an overseer of all health services in Tanzania including participatory planning, implementation, Monitoring & Evaluation of all sectoral programs in line with Health Policy and Health Sector Strategic Plans which he was involved in its development and review. As an accounting officer at the Ministry of Health he managed large Grants including Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; World Bank, and USAID and Cooperation Agreements with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
He has a passion in initiatives that support improvement of quality health services and has participated as a consultant to Institutionalize Quality Improvement for HIV and AIDS services in Tanzania through the National AIDS Control Program (NACP).
It is due to his vast experience, strong leadership and partnership with NGOs, Private Sector and other stakeholders, Tanzania made impressive gains in Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) especially reduction of under-five and infant mortality. Dr. Mmbando completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Public Health International from the University of Dar es salaam and Leeds (UK) in 1989 and 1998 respectively; Quality Management in International Health from Institute of Tropical Hygiene and Public Health – Heidelberg, Germany and Diploma in Tropical Medicine in Karolinska Institute of Infectious Diseases and Control in Stockholm, Sweden. He participated in research work related to public health in collaboration with National and International scientists. He possesses strong quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills, with ability to design and conduct research activities as well as synthesis, documentation and dissemination of results widely.
Dr. Mmbando served in various National and International Boards including Commonwealth Advisory Advisory Committee on Health (CACH); African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM); Medical Council of Tanganyika; Ifakara Health Institute, Muhimbili Othopaedic Institute (MOI); Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC); Medical Stores Department (MSD) and Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI). He is an active member of Tanzania Public Health Association (TPHA) and Medical Association of Tanganyika (MAT).
