This is one among the eight Directorates at Muhimbili National Hospital. The directorate comprises four departments and three units. The departments are; Nursing and Housekeeping, Social Welfare, Catering, and Central Sterilization. The units are; Laundry, Tailoring, and Hospital Quality Improvement unit. Its major role is provision of quality nursing services at an optimal standard, to inpatients and outpatients across the hospital including theatres, clinics etc.

Currently, the Directorate is serving 1000 -1300 admitted patients in various wards at Muhimbili National Hospital and 500-100 outpatients and emergency cases. The Directorate has a total of 1,095 nurses, whereby 832 are registered nurses; 92 being graduates with various specialities and 263 are enrolled nurses. In addition, there are 13 social welfare officers and 500 supporting staff.
